Looking ahead to the holiday season, Amazon has projected net sales between $181.5 billion (£140.7 billion) and $188.5 billion (£146.1 billion) for the current quarter, aligning with analyst forecasts. Its key cloud business Amazon Web Services (AWS) saw a 19 per cent rise in revenue as businesses deepened their reliance on cloud services amid digital transformation.Amazon boss Andy Jassy hailed AI as a “maybe once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for AWS, that Amazon is “aggressively pursuing.” He added AWS already has a “multibillion-dollar” AI business with triple digit revenue growth. The strong results also come thanks to progress from Amazon’s raft of artificial intelligence exploits that it has been developing this year.Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said this week that, for investors, the focus remains on the “monetisation of AI” spreading across the tech landscape.”The next few weeks will be the linchpin to confirmation that the AI ‘use case phase’ have now begun within the enterprise world,” he added.

Valencia mortuary overwhelmed by flood victims’ bodies

Since yesterday, several bodies of the victims of the devastating floods of the past few days have been arriving at the Valencia Palace of Justice. It is there that the authorities have set up the main mortuary required to deal with the tragedy, in which at least 95 people died (92 in the province of Valencia). In a communiqué, the Valencian judicial authority explained that ‘an entire underground level of the car park’ of the facility had been made available to house the corpses, a space that was set aside to facilitate autopsies and the identification of the bodies.According to the TV station La Sexta, ‘at least 10 hearse vehicles’ arrived within hours of the temporary mortuary being opened. In the meantime, the government sent several forensic teams from other regions and also prepared several ‘portable mortuaries’. Defence Minister Margarita Robles told Cadena Ser Radio that ‘unfortunately, we know from the Covid experience that portable mortuaries are important’, adding that psychologists have also been sent to assist survivors and relatives of victims.Riproduzione riservata © Copyright ANSA

Alonso leads practice as Verstappen faces battery woes

Montreal – The Canadian Grand Prix saw a mix of drama and speed as Formula 1 drivers battled challenging weather conditions on Friday. Max Verstappen, the current points leader, faced early setbacks when his Red Bull car started smoking due to a battery issue, forcing him to retire from the second free practice session after just four laps. Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin showcased his skills by setting the fastest lap time of 1 minute, 15.810 seconds. The day started off with Circuit Gilles Villeneuve being hit by heavy rain, lightning, and hail, causing delays and havoc for the drivers. Following the stormy weather, the track conditions improved slightly, allowing the drivers to hit the wet track about 22 minutes into the session. However, the challenging conditions led to several incidents, including Sauber driver Zhou Guanyu aquaplaning and hitting the wall at Turn 5.Despite the weather challenges, the drivers managed to navigate the track, with McLaren’s Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc showcasing competitive performances. The lone Canadian driver, Lance Stroll of Aston Martin, also put on a strong showing with a lap time of 1:16.464.As the rain continued to play a role in the proceedings, event organizers had to ask spectators to leave the grandstands for safety reasons. However, the storm subsided just in time for the expected start time, allowing the fans to return to the site and witness the exciting action on the track. With more rain expected throughout the weekend, the drivers are gearing up for a challenging qualifying session on Saturday ahead of the main race on Sunday. Despite the unpredictable weather conditions, the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix promises to be an exhilarating and unpredictable event for drivers and fans alike.(Photo Credit: Graham Hughes/The Canadian Press via AP)—Words: 289

Canary Wharf unveils ‘urban oasis’ in historic partnership with the Eden Project

Canary Wharf has introduced a groundbreaking initiative in partnership with the Eden Project, as it embraces sustainability to enhance the well-being of its workforce. The newly unveiled Eden Dock is being hailed as an “urban oasis” by the Canary Wharf Group (CWG), aiming to increase biodiversity and provide more opportunities for people to connect with nature in this bustling financial district. In response to the pressing environmental issues such as wildlife decline and urbanization, CWG emphasizes the importance of being proactive in finding solutions. The Eden Dock project sets a precedent for similar initiatives, featuring public spaces, greenery around the dock waters, and enhancements to the local biodiversity. This endeavor not only benefits the ecosystem but also aims to improve the mental and physical health of workers by offering natural spaces like floating gardens and wildlife habitats. Canary Wharf’s commitment to sustainability is evident through its longstanding practices, including sustainable building certifications, renewable energy sourcing, and waste reduction efforts. The collaboration with the Eden Project underscores the group’s dedication to addressing biodiversity loss in urban areas and creating environments where both nature and people can flourish.Shobi Khan, CEO of CWG, emphasizes the significance of Eden Dock as a pioneering example of supporting biodiversity in cities while fostering community well-being. The project signifies a step forward in the evolution of Canary Wharf into a more sustainable and resilient urban hub, known as Canary Wharf 3.0.Sir Tim Smit, co-founder of the Eden Project, commends Canary Wharf’s leadership in promoting biodiversity in an urban setting and expresses pride in collaborating with CWG. Mark Carney, former Bank of England governor and chair of Brookfield Asset Management, stresses the importance of sustainable urban planning to accommodate the growing global population while prioritizing environmental stewardship and inclusivity. As Canary Wharf transitions from a banking center to a more diversified retail and cultural destination, initiatives like Eden Dock reflect its commitment to sustainability and innovation. The area’s recent developments, including connectivity improvements and investments in life sciences infrastructure, demonstrate a strategic shift towards creating vibrant and sustainable urban environments for the future.
